It's Ellie and Jinx together again. No- this post isn't a throwback to 2014! Lexi and Jinx moved to our barn back in November and last week was the first time we were coordinated enough to manage a ride together. Not much has changed- I'm still going through my Spring nerves and Jinx is as solid a citizen as ever in his 18th year.

Over the past 12 months my barn family has morphed into a close knit group of Oakland women who regularly meet up to puppy social, host impromptu wine and cheese chats, and are always good for a laugh!
The first was a 5 day "level 2" cleanse and the second was a 3 day "level 3" cleanse. Level 3 was for the most serious cleansers and wow- I don't know that I could have gone a full five days.

Anyway, when we were at Stanford last week we stopped into an "in real life" Pressed Juicery! I picked up a day's worth of Level 3 cleanse and drank them today along with a giant plate of roast, potatoes, rolls, and butter......so I imagine it wasn't super effective.

Puppy came to work with me today (Ariat is dog friendly) and we scooted out a hair early to head to Puppy Social. Yes- a room full of playing puppies. We've been trying to stay on top of Pep's socialization and go to these things twice a week in addition to a day of training. Unfortunately tonight ended up cancelled due to the Easter weekend (silly me for not double checking the schedule) but we made the most of arriving home early and went to the park with Paul and practiced our "with me" leash skills (Paul calls me a human treat dispenser).
As I'm typing this he's lying on the futon in the Den (formerly Paul's office) sleeping and farting away. The smell got so bad that Paul actually got up to leave for a moment. I wasn't willing to step away from the bowl of pistachios I'm working my way through while we wait for our Easter Roast to slow cook.

The reason for the delay was my fault. I was sent to the grocery store and got hung up at Pet Food Express (buying treats which are likely a contributing factor in the gas right now) and hunting Cadbury Cream Eggs. Lesson learned- don't go to the store expecting to get Cream Eggs on the actual day of Easter. And kudos to Safeway for managing their Holiday inventory.

We had a glorious sleep in this morning (back on the futon, which is where we end up after puppy wake up), a walk with Paul & Pepé to Peet's (say that three times fast), trip to the park (x2), and a super lazy afternoon nap.

I think a restful Sunday was exactly what the Doc had ordered going into this week. My Mom is coming to town on Wednesday and I can't wait to spend some QT with her along with ticking off a few projects that have been on the docket for a minute.
We had SO much fun at Brookside's Beach Party Show in July. Normally it's broiling in Sacramento that time of year, but we actually got hit with some light rain showers on Thursday Pro Day and lucked out with some mild weather for the balance of the week.

Ellie was a good girl and Ted and I tackled our first 2'9" classes- they both did the Derby with Ali. Really it's the relaxed atmosphere that I enjoyed the most- from wearing Hawaiian shirts in lieu of jackets to neon pink braids for Ellie and neon green braids for Ted.

AND Jen and I rented an RV and stayed on grounds at the show which was an absolute blast- cannot wait to go again next year!

I received a wonderful treat from a "new to me" blogger- Amy & Gwyn of Quantum Chrome. I'm looking forward to following along in their adventures!

The ponies are going to be spoiled from all their treats (especially the Apple/ Banana flavored Equi-Treats) and the always popular Muscle Soothe from The Herbal Horse. I may end up sneaking some of the Muscle Soothe for myself.....along with the Be Calm for this final stretch leading up to Holiday!

Candles, Peddies, and the most legit Vetrap I've ever seen- but my favorite item of the bunch was the handmade card featuring yours truly and Ellie. What a thoughtful and personal touch! Amy is a lovely artist!

Thank you Amy & Gwyn! Cheers to a Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!

Ted was amaze-balls again on Saturday (minus a sticky change at the end of the second course)- and our two firsts and a second O/F was enough to net us Champion of the 2'9" Division.
The weather was gorgeous on Sunday so we gave him the day off and went for a nice hack instead.

Ellie continued to be super competitive in her large 2'6" division with a fourth and sixth over fences on Saturday with really consistent rounds. We left her braids out on Sunday and practiced our Equitation for fun. She was super FRESH and needed a little play before we went into the ring. OK Elle- you've only been showing for a solid week after all.

Could not be happier with the way both horses showed up and a great end to the season!
Murieta ran an $18,000 Derby across three different heights- 2'9", 3', and 3'3". While the height range is pretty enticing (there were about 50 horses entered) I did recall from earlier this year that they also have this absolutely terrifying log fence that a good number of horses had turned away from.

In addition to the log of doom they also had a barrel jump and between the two of those, the cold weather, and the late evening- the class was basically carnage. Like there was not a score above 60 for the first half. And this is a B rated show!

Fortunately I did not have to witness any trips before mine- we went second.

The course walk opened at 5:30 and the class started at 6. It took a second for my brain to relax during the walk- what sounded like a jumble of fences at first turned into a pretty straightforward 10 fence course with a bunch of bending lines.

Our warm up was somewhat ill-fated just given that there wasn't the opportunity to really take a breath. And poor Teddy- my butt turned into a rocket seat and I was clinging to him with legs of steel.
Walking to the ring our name was being called with an open gate- there was no "hurry up and wait" here. I was terrified- there were literally tears welling up in my eyes and Ted was not interested in stepping into the ring. Poor Ali was like "take it down a notch" please. And in we went.

This is a wonderfully edited video of all the best parts of our round! A flash went off after our first fence and he gave a pretty solid dolphin. The next element was a galloping 9 stride line and I was interested zero in doing that so we crawled down it in an 11 (I just cut that whole line out). Then into a bending 10 to the barrels- he landed cross cantering so I made a very large and very slow circle before catching the out fence (the out is the second fence in this video). Into a 2 stride which we drove right by since we were moving a snails pace. I don't fault the guy- we didn't have enough canter to make it out. After the stop I looked over at the gate and Ali asked if I wanted to come out. Some shouts from the stands encouraged me to keep going and the entire peanut gallery was clucking us along as we cantered past. Last a bending line, the scary log being the middle jump was supposed to be a 7 to a 6....I did a 9 to an 8.

BUT we finished. And for all the horses that stopped out at the barrels and log (Ellie for example was excused)- Ted didn't even blink. AND he landed his left lead out of the two and carried it for the balance of the course.

The horse has officially reached Saint status.

Ali had ridden Ellie to success in her 3' classes earlier in the week (and we actually cut the division short because she was being so good) and just hacked Ted. We changed the recipe for him a bit and are keeping his pro days super light.

So I kicked my day off on Friday with a flat class on Ellie. The division was large so they split the group into two classes....and even with the split it was pretty miserable. Lots of getting cut off and maybe breaking to the trot.....or not considering we placed third. Shhhhhh.

Elle and I bumbled around her first 2'6" round- I leaned into a line and she stopped. Coming out of the second course we pinned 8th which I was super pleased with.

The ring is long and narrow- the lines were set at 5 and a 6 across the diagonal. I like it for Teddy because he doesn't have time to get rolling/ super long and low. For Ellie it feels like we have to keep a ton of pace to keep ticking along. Very different rides!

So I jumped on Ted planning to use my 2'9" rounds as a warm up for the Derby. Keeping in mind that this was my lackadaisical thought process....my normal brain was very much noting that this was my third show at 2'9" ever. The above shot captures Ali and I walking to the ring- I was literally asking her if she was SURE Ted was going to be a good boy not having been schooled all week.

Spoiler alert- he was an AMAZING boy. Ted jumped like a FREAK, and played a little bit after the best fences. And landed his leads. I could not have asked for better courses on this beastie. First place in both rounds over fences. Shoot. Let's go Derby right?
Not only is she saving us from continuing to land on my April 5th too small white breeches photo..... my Equestrian Blogger gift giver will feel confident that I am a real person who actually does blog on occasion.

Hard to believe Tracy has been hosting this fun event for FIVE years running! I've participated each year and have such a fun time reading and discovering new blogs. As a hoot I grabbed my recap posts from the previous year exchanges!
I had been so concerned when five numbers were called to the middle of the ring almost right after the class began, including Teddy and Ellie. That exercise turned out to be in our favor as the top five ribbons went to those horses. I was pleasantly surprised that Ellie was included in the lineup- there were a lot of very nice horses in a large division.

I am just so proud of her. First Pre Green Show (3ft division), first Derby- she's game and keeps getting better and better! Excited for the rest of the season!
The goal is weight loss: to lose a double digit number.
Ever-practical-Paul is winning eye surgery if he meets his mark. He knows that I tend to be motivated by things that are funner (plus my vision is already pretty spot on) so he's offered up a horse show. Yes- a free horse show. Although I'm not entirely sure he realizes exactly how much they cost and I don't know if I want to divulge that information.

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I joined an MMA gym, Dragons Den, down the street from my office to shake things up while still keeping a few drop in classes at the studio close to home. So I can gym anytime, anywhere. The new place offers a noon class + evenings which works perfectly for my schedule and gives traffic the chance to lighten up a bit for the drive home.
Plus I get the chance to punch things during lunch- stress relief!

7 pounds down so far!
So his Christmas gift, a trip to Yosemite with a two night stay at The Majestic, came at the perfect time to get away.

The weather couldn't have been better with sunny 65 degree days and dry trails. We explored the valley on some absolutely stunning hikes, read books, and ate delicious meals.

I didn't realize how much I needed a moment and it was tempting to stay an extra few days!
For that matter, why does it ALWAYS seem to happen in my Equitation Rounds?

After such a great week I probably should have left well enough alone, but decided to compete in the Eq 2'6" division and it was not pretty.

A disappointing flat class (let's just tack my right arm to the side of my body please), a lost stirrup in my first round, and a VERY chippy add in the last round.

I have to laugh a bit at this first round video. T was over it and looking for a reason to spook (note the hairy eyeball he gives my videographer as he passes by during the courtesy circle). I lost my stirrup coming out of the pink outside line coming home and made a solid attempt to get it back while simultaneously executing a tight turn to the bending line. No dice. But then for some reason just decided to ride the remainder of the course sans left stirrup, which may have been passable if my last fence didn't showcase my mishap to the judge.

Perhaps if they held a class ridden without stirrups I could hold my own, but for Equitation I think you're supposed to keep them.

If you haven't watched Ellie's Derby video yet- go back a post!

Northern Winter Classic ran a $10,000 Derby that offered 3 heights- 2'9"- 3'- 3'3" and Ellie competed at the lowest height. Even though she ROCKED her 3' Division earlier in the week, it was her first time at that height and had only done one 2'9" show late last year.

RMEC has this notoriously realistic, big, scary log- and for as long as I've watched Derbies here, there are inevitably horses that just say, "nope!" The same was true for this show and we lost at least 10 horses to that log in a field of 40+. In most cases they turned to fence three, spotted the scary, and wouldn't go a step closer.

After watching the few horses before Ellie have some tough rounds I climbed to the top of the bleachers to film with a VERY large glass of wine. Not only did she truck around, she had some absolutely adorable jumps!

A score of 66 was well deserved, Ali rode her deep to most of the fences to build her confidence and she was a little quick after a few- probably wondering what the hell she had just jumped and how quickly can she get away from it!

My favorite part of the course was the two stride- she hesitated a touch through the middle but jumped out and got some airtime! And the lovely hand gallop down to the last oxer!

So proud of her!
Teddy jumped around in the 3' group and seemed entirely nonplussed by any of the fences! Unfortunately he had a few moments where he got a bit quick and scampered through a few lead changes. The spread between judges scores was significant- 74 and 80 for an average of 77. Pretty inline with what we saw earlier in the Open Division placings.

The cutoff for Top 12 was 77.5 so he just missed the Handy by a hair! Really pleased with his round!

Classes that offer a payout in a 2'6" division are VERY few and far between and at an A rated show, every little bit helps. Needless to say, with two horses attending, I had piled the pressure on myself for Saturday's $5,000 Classic.

There were two O/F rounds- the first Hunter Round wrapped up the Pre Child/ Adult division and that score, combined with the second Round Classic score, determined placings for the Classic.

Ellie went first and I liked her Hunter round quite a lot- I thought the score didn't necessarily reflect performance but there was also the addition of some new (and v nice) horses that joined the class who did not participate in the division. Hunters......and mare glare.

I see in the video that we didn't stay as straight as I would have liked coming out of the judges line which would end up being our downfall in the second round.
We biffed the first fence in a major way to start off our Classic round but had seemingly reorganized. The "Classic" component to this course was a bending line and after cutting the corner leaving the judges line, I didn't set my self up appropriately to get a nice ride into the first fence. Which also had a tiny little brick wall that pulled my eye right down to the base.

Ells could have been a touch more forgiving for my lean here, but I looked down, she stopped, and I fell off like a slow sack of potatoes. Of course this all happened at the fence FURTHEST from the gate = longest walk of shame ever.
I cleaned off my boots and climbed aboard Teddy- already worried about our lead changes and couldn't find the distance to a warm up fence to save my life. It was an exercise in compartmentalization to focus on the Teddy ride versus dwell on my tumble.

The first round was fine- a little deep to a few fences but Teddy makes everything look pretty good. A score of 77 landed us fourth going into our second round.

Horses had been riding the Classic bending line anywhere between a 6 and an 8. Thinking back to the ill-fated Christmas Derby debacle (where the line walked a 7 and I had committed to 7 and it was actually 8)- I decided to take the slightly more conservative 7 strides. When in doubt- add!

Coming around to our last fence my only thought was, "for the love of God, Emily- don't mess this up." The course rode great for us for a score of 85 and second place.
I rode Teddy and Marieka, our token junior, rode Ellie. The ring was super tight with 14 horses in the class and my heart sunk when the judge, after watching everyone trot for a few moments, pulled five of us into the center. Teddy and Ellie were both in that group. Teddy hadn't had much time to warm up, was a little stiff + managed to forge every single time we passed the judge. Everyone on the rail went through their paces and then a few more were called to the middle and the rest excused. Then we ALL went back out and did it all again.
Teddy pinned second and Ellie pinned fifth- I guess hanging out in the middle was not a terrible place to be!

To the Jumper ring for a quick .70 round to get our motor running. Or not. What course designer puts not one, but two, one stride combinations in a bitty jumper class? Are we heading to the Olympics here? No we are not.
Ellie was game up until the combo and I didn't give her the confident ride she needed the first time.....or in our second attempt. Not a great confidence builder walking straight into Hunter 2.
Our Warm Up Hunter round had a refusal- a spooky judges line that looked different from the others.....because sun happens sometimes.
We got it in gear (complete with a lot of mare glare) for our first round but she fell out in the back coming around to that damn line again. I loved our ride to the single oxer in this round!

Round 2 netted us 5th which I was super please with given the number of horses in the class. Watching the videos gives a totally different perspective to the rides. We FEEL like we're zooming around like bats out of hell, but what I see on the video is a slightly sticky mare (who doesn't look like she got her hocks done just a few weeks ago). We need to get to work at home on some of this 'tude- it just doesn't paint the prettiest picture.

After riding the speed demon I was looking forward to my rounds on Tedster, despite never having actually jumped a full course or made it down any lines on him. Needless to say, our warm up (video below) was a bit bobbled, but still landed us fifth.

Our first round Hunter course, which of course is not captured on video, was like butter. This guy reminds me of the DMV Sloths in Zootopia. He's like molasses but covers a ton of ground- plenty of time to wonder in a brief panic where my next fence was. We found the line- it is a Hunter course after all.
I loved this round and I think it was a well deserved first place.

I found out in our second Hunter Round that Teddy's favorite adult amateur stunt is to drop his shoulder and run through his lead change. So after a few of those scampers throughout the course we wrapped up the class with an 8th.

The inconsistency was probably the most difficult part to manage throughout the show. And there was a lot of it- between horses, days, and trips.

Unfortunately I missed Baby Vinnie make his show debut, but he ended up Reserve in his 2'3" division! So pleased for my barnmate and her new addition!

Ellie went first in the Pre Greens- her very first time in 3ft. Didn't look over-faced, had no problem getting down the lines. She ran a bit at the first fence in the first round, but settled down quickly and the second round got even better! She was in the jog for each of her pro rounds this week and ribboned in the middle of the pack. Super happy with her!

Teddy had come into his first day with a first, second, and third. The judge on day two didn't love him as much and he had fourth in both round of his Open Hunter division. That's Hunters for you! Nonetheless he wrapped up Reserve Champion- what a lovely boy!

A fun group dinner, Skinny Margs, and an early bedtime (at the cheapest and scariest Best Western of all time) to get ready for a FULL weekend of showing!
Oy vey! Teddy "spooked"- meaning he slowly moved sideways, at a dog, and then my confidence was shot. So his playful head toss coming out of a line caused me to lose my stirrup and burst into tears. Our show prospects were not looking promising at this point.
For the love of god- these horses have not had turnout, euro, or outdoor rides for two months at this point! If this is Teddy's "wild" I'll take it!

Ali knows me all too well so for our lessons on Saturday she had me warm them both up, then she jumped around, and then I jumped around. Exactly what I needed- visual proof that they weren't both trying to kill me.

Despite the chicken wings (elbows)- I think we got just what we needed to feel confident showing this week!
Please?I've been super worried about the show next weekend given that I haven't been able to drive either of the babies outside in......like three months.

As good as it is for their hind ends, it's super hard to check pace in a small indoor. I'll be riding Teddy tomorrow outdoors! First time- yay! I have to say, I LOVE this horse. He is just so easy! And without any baggage, I just trust him implicitly.
Ellie has been "ever-angry-ellie" and it's been hard to see the forest through the trees with her lately. We'll get through this cycle and hopefully she'll enjoy getting off property next week!

On to a weekend of cleaning trunks and tack!
